Michael Matt was in Rome when the Vatican barred the Summorum Pontificum pilgrimage from entering St. Peter’s Basilica on Christ the King weekend, when in France, a similar traditional Catholic pilgrimage to Lourdes faced the same restrictions.
While faithful Catholics were being barred from their own shrines in Europe, Cardinal Cupich presented the “Nostra Aetate Award” to a famous pro-abort here in the States. Why? Well… because… synodality, listening and accompaniment. You know, all that jazz!
In this week’s Underground, Michael connects the dots.
Why is this happening? The Pilgrimage in Rome is held in gratitude to the late Pope Benedict XVI's great pastoral solicitude. So, what about him? Why are they trasing his legacy? One bishop called it “pastoral cruelty.” But why is the Vatican being cruel?
What’s really going on here, and does it have anything to do with the SSPX?
Finally, what did Bishops Athanasius Schneider and Robert Mutsaerts have to say about all this? This is not secondhand commentary from across the Atlantic. Michael was there in Rome. He saw what happened, interviewed the bishops, and is laying out the case.
And it’s not all bad news. We can’t say this part aloud, but it true -- the Vatican just united the clans, and we have not yet begun to fight…for Holy Tradition.
