For fifty years Catholics have debated the Society of Saint Pius X, episcopal consecrations, and questions of schism and canonical status.
But according to Bishop Athanasius Schneider—and Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre before him—most people are arguing about the wrong thing. Let's examine the real "State of Emergency" in the Catholic Church: collapsing vocations, shuttered churches, empty monasteries, declining belief, the suppression of the Traditional Latin Mass, and a growing crisis of Catholic identity in the post-Vatican II era.
The question is not whether emergency measures are justified, but whether the emergency itself can still be denied.

The Traditional Latin Mass Vatican II and Nostra Aetate Pope Francis and religious pluralism

For fifty years Catholics have debated the Society of Saint Pius X, episcopal consecrations, and questions of schism and canonical status. But according to Bishop Athanasius Schneider—and Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre before him—most people are arguing about the wrong thing.
Michael Matt examines the real "State of Emergency" in the Catholic Church: collapsing vocations, shuttered churches, empty monasteries, declining belief, the suppression of the Traditional Latin Mass, and a growing crisis of Catholic identity in the post-Vatican II era.
From the record-breaking Chartres Pilgrimage to the coming SSPX episcopal consecrations, Matt argues that the deeper question is not whether emergency measures are justified, but whether the emergency itself can still be denied.

Michael Matt walks the grounds of a medieval French monastery and asks three questions:
Where have all the Catholics gone?
What hath Vatican II wrought?
Could Synodality possibly be any more irrelevant?

Why does the priest have his back to the people?
Why Communion on the tongue?
Is it okay to pray the Rosary during the Latin Mass?
So many questions about this "most beautiful thing this side of heaven" -- the 2000-year-old Roman Rite of the Catholic Mass. It dates back to Apostolic times. Its prayers originated on the lips of angels, Roman centurions, and the Son of God Himself. Right now, the Traditional Latin Mass -- sometimes called the Tridentine Mass -- is experiencing a global revival. And yet many Catholics do not understand what it means, even though it is the liturgical birthright of every baptized Catholic back to Peter the Apostle.
In this video, Father Gregory Pendergraft, FSSP, takes us through the Latin Mass, step by step, and explains why it is the Mass that matters, with special emphasis on how to PRAY the ancient Mass at which every saint, virgin, martyr, pope, king, and peasant in history assisted since the days when Jesus Christ walked this earth. Interviewed by Michael J. Matt, Father Pendergraft relies on his vast experience as traditional Catholic liturgist to present a fresh, new, and off-the-cuff explanation of why the Latin Mass matters, and why it will never die.

It backfired! Over the past forty years, the Vatican plan to cancel the SSPX by allowing the Latin Mass and even permitting TLM communities simply BACKFIRED!
Today, the number of TLM parishes has quadrupled, causing the late Pope Francis to panic and determine to do whatever he could to slow the rapid expansion of the Latin Mass globally.
So, with the SSPX consecrations of new bishops upon us (this coming July 1), the Latin Mass movement finds itself at a crossroads again -- will we let tribalism divide the clans, or will we unite the loyal opposition, stay in the Church, and keep the Faith? That is the question.
Falling back on his 40 years of experience, Michael Matt discusses the lessons of 1988, the role of the Fraternity of St. Peter, what we have learned, and what we must do moving forward. United we stand, divided we fall. We must get this right!

The world is inching toward wider war, and suddenly the divide between President Trump and Pope Leo XIV is impossible to ignore. While Trump escalates rhetoric against Iran, Pope Leo warns against nuclear war and the “delusion of omnipotence.” Meanwhile, Cardinal Grech’s Synodal revolution marches forward in Rome, just as the SSPX prepares for what could become the most explosive confrontation between Tradition and the Vatican since 1988.
